Spartans Send Two to State
Goshen, OH (February 19, 2005)— Sr. Billy Deeter was all smiles after winning the 145-pound title bout against Brookville's Jeff Johns, 12-5. It was the rubber match for the two wrestlers, who had meet twice before. Johns won the first time at the league meet, then Deeter came back to get the win at sectionals.
"The first time he threw me twice. He's good at throwing. I learned from that and it helped at sectionals. I beat him by five points there," Deeter said.
Deeter will advance to the State Tournament in Columbus next weekend along with fellow teammate Matt Land. Land, a three-time state qualifier, defeated Clem Artmann (Hillsboro) 3-1 for a third place finish earning him the Columbus trip. Deeter's district win is only the third in school history. Land (2004) and Jimmy Wallace (1998) are the only other two in the record books.
Deeter is ready for his shot at state and with a year's more experience he has a great chance. "It's nice to have that honor as district champ. Last year, I was more in awe (at the state tournament). This year Iım ready and I want to place," Deeter said. As a jr. Deeter went 0-2 in the state trip. Land went 1-2 in his second trip to the state in 2004.
In other matches, sophomore Andy Wellbaum, in his first district attempt, went 2-2 in the 103-pound division, losing in the first round but coming back for two solid wins over Nick Samad (New Richmond) 16-8 and Joe Danielson (New Lexington) 4-3. Wellbaum's second loss, in the third consolation semi-finals to Joe Jellison (Ross), cost him the trip to the district finals.
Brian Parker just missed the district finals at 275-pound when he lost in overtime to Cory Davis (Circleville). Parker went 2-2 on the day, including a first round pin of Adam Spears (Western Brown) in 2:53.
Craig Burton's day started out well with aa 13-8 decision over Dustin Winters (Gallia Academy), but quickly went downhill in the first consolation against Kyle Spence of Benjamin Logan. Spence (36-10) pinned Burton (27-7) in 19 seconds. Burton ended the day 1-2 overall.
