Spartan Second Half Routs Madison
Germantown, OH (October 2, 2004)— Boys Soccer Coach Devon Stoutenborough spent the better part of the first half, in Saturday's game against the Madison Mohawks, wondering where his team went. This was not the same group that just two days earlier beat Bellbrook in the final minutes, 1-0, to grab a share of the SWBL lead.
"They were very sluggish," observed Stoutenborough.
So sluggish in fact that Stoutenborough dressed the junior varsity during the half-time break so he could play them in the second frame.
"I would have done it too. They had ten minutes coming out of the break to make something happen or the JV was going in," said Stoutenborough.
And make something happen, they did. Mathias Bach drilled one to the back of the net in the first four minutes followed by Jamie Bisceglia two minutes later and in the course of the first six minutes the score had become 3-0.
You could hear the JV grumble on the sidelines as they squished around in their wet socks, knowing they just might have been pawns in Stoutenborough's game plan to motivate his varsity squad.
They stayed motivated for the remainder of the period, scoring three more times to move their record to 6-5-2 overall. Madison's lone goal was on a penalty kick that just sailed past keeper Jordan Donson's reach
The Spartans have two remaining league games in which they are assuradely "must win" situations in order to protect their current share of the league title.
"We've played excellent in six of our last eight halves. If we play like we played in this second half, we have a good chance," noted Stoutenborough.
The Spartans play this Monday at Edgewood in a make-up game before beginning their final SWBL run against Milton-Union on Tuesday (Oct. 5).
