Spartan Golfers Take Ridge Classic
Dayton, OH (September 9, 2004) The Spartans' golf season has just surpassed the half-way mark and still in the thick of the race for the SWBL title.
Last week, the Spartans beat Monroe before they took an unbelievable win away from Milton-Union's grasp when they added a fifth player's score to break a tie, and beat the Bulldogs by two-strokes.
"After the first two guys finished, we were down 15 strokes. Our second two, Bud Hostler and Jimmy Lawson came in with pretty good scores to put us just five strokes away. John Tipton and Stewart Dunn were our last group to finish and they tied us up with Milton-Union," Wallace commented.
After a huge leap back to the front of the score, the Spartans and Bulldogs had to bring in an additional number to break the tie. And it was Dunn's 48 that helped pull the Spartans grab the victory.Wallace had said at the beginning of this season, "we have the potential to be great." And now as the season progresses, that potential is becoming more and more a reality.
It definitely became a reality this past Saturday when the boys competed in the Ridge Classic at Kittyhawk and went home not only champions, but also set a new course record.
"We set the record last year with a round of 300," Russ noted.
Hostler took the champion spot when he completed the course two under par (70) and Austin Smith took second place with a 74.
John Tipton (77) and Jimmy Lawson (78) both recorded their lowest scores helping drive Valley View to the top.
Wallace was excited to see the boys come together and enjoy themselves on the course.
"We're pretty good. They've all go some ability, but it's having everyone play well at the same time that makes the difference," Wallace said.
"We have been up and down. The boys went up and practiced there (Kittyhawk) before the competition and they really like the course too," added Wallace.
Tuesday night, Valley View continued to carve the letter "W" on their schedule when they took out Dixie 173-168.
Smith finished with a 39, Kelly Hogg and Lawson both recorded a 42 and Hostler finishing with a 44.
Last season's group of golfers brought a new look to the course when they took the SWBL title and second place in the SWBL tournament, before advancing to Districts.
And the 2004 squad is continuing on the same path and might even make that path much wider. They return to action tonight (Thursday)as they go up against Waynesville.
