Spartans Quietly Post Seventh Win
Germantown, OH (October 15, 2005) In an eerily quiet Barker Field, the Valley View Spartans overcame two first quarter penalties to down the Preble Shawnee Arrows, 37-7.
In a game that had been postponed the day before due to the death of varsity cheerleader, Jamie Bryant, the Spartans could only walk away with three, first quarter points, after a holding call on each of their first two possessions, called back a Curtis Moore touchdown, and then a Derrick Velte score.
The Spartan defense owned the Arrows, holding Shawnee to 127 yards of total offense, allowing only 19 yards in the first half. Elliot Boyd tied the record for Most Career Field Goals with 10, just missing the record when a 37-yarder in the first quarter fell short by inches. Boyd's kick tied with Korry Frizzel who booted his ten in the 1998, 1999 seasons.
A 57 yard scamper and a 74 yard touchdown run to start the third quarter, helped Spartan workhorse Curtis Moore get back on track after being held to just 37 yards the week before. The Spartans garnered 330 yards of total offense on the strength of Moore's performance.
The Spartan passing game saw some changes with sophomore QB Chris Cason spreading his 148 yards over eight different receivers. In addition to the usual beneficiaries of Derreck Velte (1-28), Rex Pitsinger (1-10), and Jarryd Smith (1-21), Coach Niswonger utilized some JV standouts (Lucas Donson 3-33, John Day 1-14, and Andy Genslinger 1-14) that did elicit some rare celebration from the Spartan grandstand.
