Mistakes Set Up Milton Rout
West Milton, OH (October 8, 2005) For the first time since the Bulldogs rejoined the SWBL in 2001, Milton-Union downed the mistake-riddled Spartans, 54-21. The win evens the series record at 6-6 dating back to 1975.
But it might just be the Spartans special team play that helped the Bulldogs to their first win since a 33-0 shutout in 1981. Three back-to-back fumbles on kick-offs gave the Bulldogs the short field that the Spartans are usually accustom to playing on.
However sloppy offense play, including four interceptions (two returned for touchdowns), was just as much their undoing that lead to the Spartans first loss of the season.
The loss comes on the heals of six weeks of improving play. This loss is no different. Despite a 34-0 third-quarter deficit, Cason and company still remained very poised in their attempt to overcome a very difficult situation. Their patience and composure under pressure provided some relief under otherwise bleak circumstances.
The Spartans will shake off the dust, regroup and prepare for Friday's return to Barker Field against the Preble Shawnee Arrows. Despite the Arrow's weak 2005 performance, prepare to see a more focused Spartan offensive unit.
And more focus they'll need. The Spartans will face their toughest two games of the season against Eaton and Bellbrook at the end of their schedule. Both will certainly view the Milton loss as a chink in the Spartans armor. Valley View needs not just a decisive win against the Arrows, but they'll need to correct those mistakes that the Bulldogs so effectively exploited.
