Spartans Win Big in Overtime
Germantown, OH (September 3, 2005) It took an extra frame to accomplish the mission but the Valley View Spartans refused to falter on their way to capturing their second win of the season, 32-26.
The Valley VIew Spartans spotted the Roger Bacon Spartans to a 12-0 first quarter deficit behind the passing strength of QB Kurt Rocco. Rocco's 262 yard performance was overshadowed by the lone interception he tossed to Mitch Howard that set up the Spartans winning touchdown in overtime. But it was Bacon's gamble to go for the two-point conversion on their first two touchdowns that led to their ultimate demise.
Despite the overall containment, Rocco was able to pass at will against the Valley View secondary, historically the way all Spartan opponents have been able to muster big plays. Yet the young Spartan team continued to battle back on each occassion in one huge team effort.
Curtis Moore led all rushers with 131 yards on 17 carries, for an overall average of over 7.7 yards per carry. His longest, a 28-yard shuttle pass from sophmore QB Chris Cason, helped set up the Spartans first touchdown of the evening. But it was a 34-yard toss from back-up QB Derrick Velte to Jarryd Smith, moving the ball to the 3 yard line, that fired up the Spratans faithful.
Valley View hits the road next week for the first time in 2005, taking on the Fairborn Skyhawks, who suffered a 21-27 overtime loss to Beavercreek in week two. The Spartans will be looking to avenge their 2004 loss against the Skyhawks.
Fairborn returns only four starters on both sides of the ball from its 2004, 7-3, team. Copeland, a running back last season, gets the call up to QB in 2005 and the plan is to stick with the spread offense in which former QB Yantko flourished.
