Spartans Plunder The Pirates, 49-7
Germantown, OH — Valley View, behind the strong running of jr. fullback Brock Bolen, blows past the West Carrollton Pirates, 49-7 in non-league action Friday night.
Bolen scored six times to break the record set by all-star Thomas Howard in 1982. Bolen's 157 yards rushing was just eight yards shy of the Pirates total offense. Ross Peters (jr. WR), who had an earlier touchdown called back, scored on a 65-yard pass from jr. QB Teddy Buehner for the Spartans other score.
It wasn't just all offense for the boys in blue. Danny King (sr. DL) owned the West Carrollton backfield dropping both Pirate QB Aaron Gomez and RB Jason Elam for losses on three occasions. JR. DB Stephen Moyer picked off Gomez for his second interception in as many games along with sr. Brandon Wilson who grabbed his first interception of the young season.
It's the explosiveness of the offensive and defensive lineman that appears to have stymied both Franklin and West Carrollton to this point. The offensive speed off the ball is opening up holes for Bolen, Buehner, and Cline and defensively blowing right through the opponents line into the backfield.
Coach Niswonger's hurry-up offense play calling every snap has also kept the opponents defense off guard and given his charges little time to think about what can happen and just concentrate on making it happen. It's added an exciting new dimension to the run-and-shoot basics of the early 1990's teams and provided a fresh approach to his success as a proven innovator.
Spartans Meet Spartans
The Valley View faithful will have to travel to neighboring Greene County this week when their beloved Spartans take on league rival Waynesville.
After last season's two-day welcoming to the league and to Valley View football, the Waynesville Spartans (0-2) will be looking to avenge a rain-soaked 61-0 loss.
The Spartans are coming off a 49- 28 loss to neighbor Clinton-Massie (1-1), Waynesville's only win in the 2001 season. 2002 was a different story with Massie gaining over 400 yards of total offense and forcing six Waynesville turnovers.
It's going to be tough for second-year coach Bob Franz to rally the troops based on their 2001 figures. With a dismal eight points on offense and a defense that allowed 37.1, the Valley View Spartans look like a shoe-in.
Valley View will need to be on the lookout for sr. WR Brandon Hiatt. Hiatt scored twice against the Falcons last week, once on an 83-yard run. Hiatt also holds the school record for receptions at 28. Despite three interceptions on the year, the hometown Spartans haven't really been tested in the secondary.
If the starters hadn't left the Pirate game with 8:49 left in the third quarter our prognosticar wouldn't have even been close in his prediction. As it was, he hit it right on money. The Spartan's no huddle offense will stymie the defense once more this week and if Jay calls off the dogs early in the third again, 42-0 looks like a fair prediction. Otherwise, look for a blowout with only the JV squad allowing a lone score or two.
