Spartans Make It Four in a Row

Germantown, OH — The Valley View Spartans racked up 561 yards before an overflow crowd at Barker Field to down the Madison Mohawks, 56-14. The win keeps Valley View tied at the top the SWBL Southwestern Division with Oakwood at 4-0. Madison drops to 1-3.

The Spartans first score came on Teddy Bueher pass to Nick Alldred who went 24-yards with 6:45 remaining in the first quarter. Buehner was 17 of 27 passing for 228 yards and a TD for the evening.

The Spartans failed to move the ball on their next possession after three straight incomplete passes. Madison would move the ball deep into Valley View territory before Brandon Wilson recovers a Mohawk fumble at the 21-yard line. It took 9 plays to go the 79 yards for Spartans second score on a 1-yard quarterback keeper.

Valley View's third score came at 5:54 remaining in the second quarter and was capped off by a 29-yard pass from Buehner to Brock Bolen. Two plays later Bolen scored his first TD of the game.

Seconds later Ryan Clark would stop the Mohawks with his first interception of the year and in three plays Valley View would make it a 28-0 lead at the 3:50 mark in the second quarter.

Madison then mounted a drive of some substance before sophomore LB Chase Collins recovered a Mohawk fumble at the Valley View 2-yard line. One play later the Spartans would return the favor when Bolen would lose the ball and Madison recovered in the end-zone for their first score with 1:07 to play in the half.

Penalities and injuries would plague the Spartans during the third quarter as well as the inability to stop the Madison passing game. The Spartan defensive secondary consistently found itself being exploited. Bolen aggravated a bonespur in his foot that benched him at the 4:47 mark after his second and final TD of the game. Sr. LB Clint Hanahan assumed his duties. Bolen will return for next week's Brookville matchup.

A shoestring tackle on the Mohawks possession by jr. DB Stephen Moyer (his second of the game), only postponed the inevitable as Tyler Palumbo eventually went the one yard for Madison's final score of the game. Valley View rushed right back on a 8-yard run by Hanahan to push the score to 49-14. The junior varsity would take over in the fourth frame adding a score of their own when sophomore John Rupp crossed the goal line from 1-yard out to give the Spartans a 56-14 final score.

Notable statistics: Justin Givens has 23 consecutive extra points to his credit. Bolen's TD total moves to 15 on the season with 84 points scored and 679 yards rushing. Buehner evens his passing at 600 yards over four starts to give him a 150-yard per game average.

Brookville - Real or Fantasy?

An 81-yard kick return made the score look closer than it really was as Brookville (1-3) lost to Milton-Union (3-1) 25-19 this past week. The Blue Devils had the lead once, 7-6 early in the second quarter before finally succumbing to the Bulldogs.

Brookville's only win this season came against Eaton, 7-6. It was a 72-yard return that enabled them to escape with the victory. The Blue Devils have been able to hold there own against the perennial powerhouses Versailles, 27-15 and Bellbrook, 34-20

Their key returners from last seasons 6-4 team are Sr. LB-TE Doug Stephan, Sr. DE Eric Cultice, Jr. DT-OT Eric Partlow, Jr. DB Nathan Snedeker. Second-year coach Hetrick calls his team "young, but experienced young." Offensive tackles Partlow and Josh Daniels and guards Eric Kump and Alex Daulton all started as sophomores and and another sophomore, Josh Turner, joins them this season at center.

The Blue Devil defense will need to be outstanding if they intend to have any chance. The Spartans are averaging 55 points a game and the starting defense just gave up their only touchdown of the season this past week against Madison. Brookville has a daunting task before them.

It would take a major Spartan breakdown on both offense and defense for the Blue Devils conceivably walk a away with a win. They do play tough at home so we're going to give them an edge in that category. We still don't see this as being anything but a blowout. We let them score once, Valley View 49, Brookville 7.
