Valley View Clinches Share Of Division Title
Bellbrook, OH — Bellbrook tried to own a "piece of the Brock" but fell short as the the Valley View Spartans remain undefeated on the strength of a 38-14 win against the Eagles.
Spartan jr. standout, Brock Bolen, rushed for 210-yards (fifth on the Spartan all-time list) on 32 carries to bring his season total to 1527 yards. Bolen also caught two passes for 55 yards.
Valley View's defense showed its mettle on Bellbrook's first series, when on third and one Jeremy Gibbs and Josh Kozusek sacked QB Jack O'Dell for a loss and forced the Eagles to punt.
The Spartans then drew first blood at the 8:38 mark when QB Teddy Buehner bootlegged left and ran 11-yards untouched to get his first of two TDs. Buehner had 141-yards on the evening.
Again the Spartan defense rose to the occasion helped by a Brandon Ritze tipped pass resulting in third and 15 and then relentless pursuit on O'Dell to force an incomplete pass. The Eagles were punting for the second time in as many tries.
Bellbrook's defense proved somewhat effective on the Spartans next two possessions. Despite fourth and one and fourth and two conversions the Spartans were unable to score again until the second quarter when Justin Givens kicked a 36-yard field goal set up by a Clint Hanahan fumble recovery.
Buehner's pass to the open arms of jr. WR Ross Peters upped the Spartan lead to 17-0 to finish out the first half scoring. The Spartan defense had held the Eagles to a meager 47 yards and one first down, virtually dominating first half play.
Was it a different Eagle offense or a Valley View defensive change that started second half play with back-to-back Bellbrook scores? Perhaps it was both.
Second half action began with a Spartan fumble on their opening drive. All of a sudden it became the Jack O'Dell-Chris Iacovone show. The Spartan defense went to an uncharacteristic pass prevent look that allowed O'Dell and Iacovone to show their stuff and move the score to within three points after their first two possessions. Returning to the lightning and thunder blitzes at the line kept the Bellbrook offense in check for the remainder of the game.
When Teddy Buehner dove over three defenders at the 2:39 mark to score his second touchdown of the game, the momentum passed back to the Spartan camp igniting the defense. Josh Kozusek blocked an O'Dell field goal attempt on the Eagle's next series and the rest of the game became the Spartans.
