Is the SWBL really the same as the KTC?

Germantown, OH — Valley View welcomed league newcomer Waynesville this weekend in a game that took two days to complete. It would be interesting to see how the visiting Spartans would do against the old guard of the SWBL. To put it mildly, the outcome was predictable.

The View started out the game as they have started them all this season, with a fumble on the second play of the game, but quickly recovered it. This however, left them in a hole that they could not dig out from. After an exchange of punts Valley View found themselves on their own 16, but this did not deter them as they marched down the field and capped off the drive with a 21 yard pass from Drew Smith to Ted Buehner with 5:09 left in the first. The two point conversion was good on a pass from Abner to Byrd.

On the kick off, Waynesville ended up at their own 19 on an excellent open field tackle by Justin South. As the defense held, the hometown Spartans take over in the second quarter and marches from their own 28, finishing with a 13 yard run by Buehner with 6:12 in the half. The game was then stopped due to weather at 4:52 and the score 15-0

As the game resumed on Saturday, the defense was even less forgiving than the night before. It appeared that Josh Kozuszek spent a good deal of his time in the Waynesville huddle as he was constantly in their back field, registering 2 sacks in the second half. Then comes another weather delay with 21 seconds in the half. Not enough time to do anything you would think? Not for the View. First play after the delay, Brock Bolen goes for almost 71 yards, before fumbling in the endzone where Waynesville recovered. It was this small, insiginificant act that would fire the defense up for the rest of the evening.

The third quarter saw the beginning of the end for the visiting team. Tommy Byrd returns a punt for 66 yards, but wait, there was a penalty. Now someone will have to explain this call to me. A sideline infraction, helping the runner interlock blocking? What is this? What we think happened was a VV player was knocked out of bounds and then came back onto the field. The official only saw him come back. Anyway, the TD stood and a penalty never was assesed.

On the ensuing kickoff, Byrd stops them at the 14. Waynesville seemed to be in disarray racking up several delay of game calls, apparent throughtout on both day's of play and now beginning to get the referee's attention. Waynesville gets the ball and tries to pass, but a vicious hit by Michael Whaley jars the ball loose, recovered by Josh Deeter and Valley View takes over on the Waynesville 23. Valley View again scores on a 7 yard run by Bolen.

The scoring in the fourth started with a 13 yard run by Bolen. Waynesville fumbles the ball and it is recovered by Clint Hanahan on the Waynesville 22. Smith took this one in from 5 yards out. In the next series, Buehner took over the reigns at QB and finished off a drive with a 5 yard scoring run. The last score was on a 44 yard interception return by Steven Moyer. Final score, VV 61 Waynesville 0

The defense played a very good game. The hard hits were coming from everywhere.Tommy Byrd had a tackle that could be heard over 100 yards away. Waynesville's coach, Bob Franz, indicated earlier this season that there wasn't much difference in the SWBL and the KTC. I wonder what he thinks of the SWBL now? Welcome to Valley View Football and welcome to the SWBL..

A little reflection about the Dixie Greyhounds. After so many winless seasons they find themselves at 2-1. Losing by a score of 2 - 0 to Eaton has to be a moral victory for the Greyhounds. Excellent job this year gentlemen. Hard work and perseverance has finally paid off for a team that always, no matter what, gave all that they had to the game.
