Spartans Remain In SWBL Title Hunt

Germantown, OH (January 4, 2005)— Strong defense and timely rebounding gave the Spartans (7-3, 4-1) a 45-27 win over the Milton-Union Bulldogs (6-5, 3-2) and sole possession of second place in the SWBL Southwestern Division.

Despite spreading the scoring around between ten different players, Valley View continued to struggle offensively, only managing to shoot 12 of 47 from the field (25.5%).

It was on defense however, that the Spartans excelled, holding the 'Dogs to just three points in the second period and six in the fourth, allowing them to play more conservatively on offense.

"Offensively we're still a little sluggish, but every other aspect of the game, we played well," commented coach Steve Dickson.

Valley View grabbed 14 steals on their way to victory and only turned the ball over a season-low 10 times.

"As long as we play that up-tempo style of basketball, and keep moving the ball around, we're a pretty good team. Tonight we did that and we rebounded well.

The Spartans are still laboring to get their inside game going but have shown signs of improvement in their last game against Dayton Christian and built upon in this win against the Bulldogs.

"We've been working on that in practice. At the post, they just need to make themselves bigger to get those inside shots"
