Lumberjacks Rally Upsets Number 7 Spartans

On the strength of quarterback, Robby Sherk, the Oakwood Lumberjacks (3-1) overcame a 21-7 first quarter deficit, to score three unanswered touchdowns and roll past the Valley View Spartans (3-1), 28-24.

With the game barely a minute old, the Spartans (AP No. 7, Division III) struck first with a 40 yard pass from John Day to the wide open Travis Dalton to marched in for the touchdown. Michael Boyd converted for the 7-0 lead. On their next possession, despite a 10 yard holding penalty, the Lumberjacks’ Sherk was able to convert a third and 12 into a first down and on the next play toss a six yard TD into the open arms of John Whalen to knot the score.

The Spartans marched right back down the field scoring on a 7 yard pass from Day to sophomore running back, Brandon Fox with 2:37 left in the first quarter.

On Oakwood’s next possession senior linebacker Kyle Combs blocks a fourth and 22 point, recovering in the end zone to give Valley View a 21-7 lead with :28 left first quarter.

The Lumberjacks went on to score 21 unanswered points before the Michael Boyd scoots a 30 yard field goal for the final Spartan score. Oakwood gets its first win in the SWBL Buckeye Division. Valley View falls to 3-1, 0-1.

The Spartans face Milton Union at Barker Stadium in week 5. The Bulldogs (1-3) are coming off a 24-14 loss to Franklin (2-2) in week 4.
