Spartans Start Slow, Win Big

Penalties and fumbles kept the Valley View Spartans out of the end zone for a while in Friday nights inter-divisional game with the Carlisle Indians.

A fumble on their second possession of the game turned the ball over to the Indians at the Valley View 27 yard line and  another on the Spartan 16 yard line with 2:32 to go in the first half. A strong defensive effort kept the Indians out of the end zone on both occasions.

But Valley View couldn’t compete with the officials, who threw the flag 14 times in the first half, allowing the Indians their first score on four straight Spartan penalties in the second quarter to cut Valley View’s lead to one, 7-6.

Travis Dalton’s 60 yard run just before the half, set up a 21 yd touchdown pass from Johnny Day to Lucas Donson, with no time left on the clock, that  gave the Spartans a lead 21-6 at the half.

It was sophomore running back, Jordan Jacobs (5’7″, 130), that owned the second half. After the Indians were forced to punt on their first possession of the second half, Jacobs returned the kick 90 yards for his first Friday night touchdown, upping the score 28-6. Again with 7:44 remaining in the game, Jacobs took another punt 85 yards down the field to score a second TD and giving the Spartans a 42-6 lead.

Jacobs two TDs were the first in a game since Doug Cox ran a pair back in 1999 and places him on the all time list with Jordan Reiger (1998) and Jeremy Lynch (1992). Cox holds the record for most punt returns for TDs in a season (1999) with four.
