Teacher Bests Student, Again.

Sophomore Chris Lykins breaks up the two-point conversion attempt intended for former Spartan, now Carlisle Indian, Jordan Jacobs. Jacobs caught 2 passes for 40 yards.
“Be prepared to see some exciting things tonight,” Valley View football coach Jay Niswonger said with a big smile, prior to his team taking the field against the Carlisle Indians Friday night.
Despite the absence of quarterback Kyle Pohl with a concussion, running back Joe Kelly with a leg injury, and offensive lineman Wes Jackson with a separated shoulder, Niswonger’s Valley View Spartans found a way to come from behind and defeat the Indians, 22-8. Both teams even their records at 6-2.
Carlisle scored first when they sacked running back Zac Cottingim in the endzone, just two plays after a stingy Spartan defense stop the Indians on 4th and inches at the goal line, to go ahead 2-0.
The Spartans finally found the end zone on a tipped pass that eluded three Indian defenders and ended up in the arms of junior wide receiver, Robbie Skidmore, to end the third quarter.
However on their next possession Carlisle, on an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, found themselves in prime field position, and on a 1 yard run by QB Jake Gibson, regained the lead, 8-7.
The Indians’ lead didn’t last long.
Valley View came roaring back when Tyler Schenck fumbled the kick at the 15 and then expertly avoided tacklers for 85 yards to put the Spartans back on top 15-8, while at the same time dealing a blow to the short-lived Indian momentum.
The Spartans sealed the deal with 3:10 left in the game when they stopped the Indians on a 4th-and-2, just missing the first down by inches, and a minute and a half later QB/RB Brandon Fox raced 68 yards to the end-zone giving Valley View the 22-8 win.
Carlisle’s last win against the Spartans came 21 years ago, in 1988, 27-15. Valley View leads the series 28-8, including an 82-0 win in 1995.
