Valentine’s Day Scams
We’re not against LOVE. We’re not against ROMANCE. We’re not against VALENTINE’S DAY. Don’t take us the wrong way.
We’re all about protecting your computer from the malicious attacks that sucker you in under the guise of sending that someone special the perfect gift or saying.
With Valentine’s Day looming, don’t be fooled by one of the many online scams! You don’t want to get an infection this way (perhaps any way).
One phishing email is spoofed to appear that comes from Americangreetings.com, a well known e-card company. Click on the link, which claims you’ve been sent a Valentine’s card, and you’re redirected to a page that looks exactly like American Greetings, It then tells you that “You don’t have the latest version of Macromedia Flash Player”.
Once installed, you won’t fill the itching right away, but Yup, you’ve been infected. Nasty.
It’s not the only topical risk around today either. Anti-virus companies, including Symantec, report a big surge in infected email with Valentine’s taglines. The messages have file attachments which of course carries a Trojan or worm or some other malicious malware.
Of course we have long said that if you’re running anti-virus and anti-spyware, then you lessen the chances of being vunerable. But those applications still won’t save you from your own stupdity.
If you really want to send your mom, girlfriend, or wife a Valentine’s Day card or gift, go directly to the vendor’s Web site. Don’t be sucked in by a fancy email message. You’ve got more will power than that.
It’s not just Valentine’s Day when the hackers come out. Every major holiday or event has it’s own special brand of scamming.
So be vigilant all the time. Just don’t blindly click links. Think about what you’re clicking. Every link will provide a clue as to where it’s going to take you just by hovering over it and looking at either the tool tip, in your mail program, or the status bar in your Web browser. Think before you click.
