The path to the state tournament is a long one but then the distance doesn’t really matter for jr. cross-country runner, Jake Kasperski.
Kasperski finished in the top 16 qualifiers, in last weekend’s Division II Regional finals, sending him to the state finals in Columbus this weekend.
Kasperski finished in eight place with a time of 16:43.68 just 30.12 seconds out of first place. There were 130 runners in the Regional Finals hosted by Troy High School. His time was just .31 seconds slower than his 16:43.37 mark that garnered him a second place finish in the SWBL tournament.
Jake has had a great season, generally running in the 16’s or low 17’s all year”, commented coach Denny Shepherd. “He won the Bellbrook, Franklin and Madison Invitationals and finished second at Mason and Northridge.
Kasperski ran a 16:54.81in the District tournament at the Miami Valley Career Tech Center to finish fourth that qualified him for last week’s Regional run.
“I’m hoping for a top twenty finish,” noted Shepherd. “He is just a great athlete who works hard and is very humble about his accomplishments.”
The Division II State finals begin at 11:50 am this Saturday at Scioto Downs in Columbus. Scioto Downs is located at 6000 S. High Street, just two miles south of Interstate 270 on Route 23 South (High St.). Admission is $9.00.

The Valley View Spartans, with a furious attempt in the final two minutes of the game to come from behind lost to the Brookville Blue Devils Friday night, 20-27.
With three seconds left in the game and a chance to tie, QB Johnny Day’s pass to Andy Genslinger was broken up in the endzone, dashing the Spartans hopes for a come from behind victory. Valley View had recovered two onside kicks to pull the game within 7 points before time ran out on the clock.
The Spartan offense sputtered most of the first three quarters, shooting themselves in the foot on critical third and fourth down situations. Two fumbles, five sacks, and three interceptions plagued the Valley View offense and at critical moments in the red zone.
Early on, the Valley View defense struggled to contain the run up the middle, reminiscent of last week’s Caudill Daulton’s performance. On Brookville’s second possession, sr. running back Josh Doles, ran through the middle, 47 yards, for the first score of the game. Doles, who ended the game with 153 yards, later scored from 70 yards out on the same play. Not to be out done, jr. running back Jason Stone, scored on a similar play up the middle from the mid-field mark.
Brookville’s final TD came on an interception, followed by two consecutive Spartan personal foul penalities that eventually gave the Blue Devils the ball in the red zone. Valley View racked up 11 penalties in the game, 6 of those personal fouls.
Sophomore, Jordan Jacobs, scored the first Spartan touchdown with 3:30 to go in the first half, on a 30 yard pass that required a second effort to reach the end zone. Day finished the game with three touchdowns (22 yards to Andy Genslinger and 30 yards to Kyle Pohl) and three interceptions, completing 18 of 38 passes for 265 yards.
Phil Worrel led the Spartan defense with 9 tackles, followed by John Raisch with eight.
With the win, Brookville captures the SWBL Southwestern Division title. Valley View finishes third. Each had already clinched a spot in the playoffs.

The Valley View Spartans will travel to play the unbeaten Brookville Blue Devils in Week 10 hoping to end their losing streak at 1. A win will assure them of no less than a third place finish in the SWBL Southwestern Division and enhance their opportunity to host a first round playoff game. The Spartans have already clinched a playoff spot regardless of the outcome. The top four teams in each region host the first round of games.
The Blue Devils are hoping for a win to nail down the SWBL title and maintain their ranking in the D.IV Region 16 standings, along with home field advantage. A Brookville loss, coupled with an Oakwood victory against Franklin, would give them a share of the SWBL crown and knock them out of the top four in Region 16.
Blue Devils coach, Mike Hetrick, was the Coach of the Year in 2007, taking his team to a 7-4 season and the playoffs after a dismal 4-6 season the year before. Hetrick is son to Al Hetrick, one of the most successful high school football coaches in Ohio high school history. Hetrick won six state titles at Versailles High School over 38 years and led the Tigers to 334 wins and nine state finals.
Brookville comes into Week 10, unbeaten at 9-0 outscoring opponents, 334-94 with a combined record of 34-46. Only three of their nine opponents have records over .500, Oakwood (7-2), Franklin (5-4), and Dixie 5-4).
Valley View has outscored their opponents 335-140, with a combined record of 40-41. The Spartans have also only played three teams over .500, Oakwood (7-2), Indian Hill (7-2), and Franklin (5-4).
