Do You Think…

Maybe it’s just us at Valley View Online, but don’t you think it’s a little bit rude that the Gemantown Press has a big full-page spread of last Friday’s Franklin football game and just a couple of paragraphs on the Hometown Spartans?

Doesn’t the banner on the paper say “Germantown”? We get a front page story on a girl who went to China for the Olympics and local Seniors who competed in a volleyball tournament but not much else of local interest except the “run it every week” Farmersville immunization article.

Any local advertisers out there? Do you feel cheated that the paper you spend money with covers everything but the local news?

All readers get are fluff pieces and reruns of the same events. When are we going to see some real news coverage of events? If their lone reporter can find the time to write hundreds of column inches about fluff, certainly the paper could put them to better use by attending council meetings, School board meetings, or a myriad of sporting events.

We just thought we’d mention it.

Spartans Come From Behind To Remain Undefeated

Posted by Mike Dowden On August - 30 - 2008     ADD COMMENTS

QB John Day’s 22-yard pass to Justin Griffiths in the endzone and a Michael Boyd conversion with 1.2 seconds left in the game, gave the Valley View Spartans a 42-41 win against the Indian Hill Braves at Tomahawk Stadium Friday night.

The Spartans got the ball back, after a Braves touchdown and a blocked extra point, with 35.6 seconds left on the clock. Day hit RB Andy Genslinger for 19 yards that advanced the Spartans to the 16 yard line but two subsequent incomplete passes and a motion penalty put the Spartans on the 22 yard line with 7 seconds remaining and setting up the come from behind win.

Valley View advances to 2-0 while the Braves even their season at 1-1. The Spartans return home next week to face SWBL rival, Monroe. Monroe was a 28-21 victim to Fenwick in Week 2 action.

Spartans Ready for 2008 Season

The Valley View Spartans visited the Edgewood Cougars Friday night as final preparation for their season opener this Friday against Thurgood Marshall. The Spartans topped the Cougars 34-7 in the first half before the Junior Varsity took over in the third quarter.

The Spartans return 10 starters on defense. Seniors Jaryd Brown and Phil Worrell anchor the front line with help from senior linebackers Joey Mosley, Kyle Combs and junior David Day, as well as a platoon of Zac Cottingim, J.P. Woodard, Mark Hurd and Andy Allen. Starting defensive backs Sean Figley, John Raisch and Blake Shephard are on the list of those to watch when the defense takes the field.

The offensive line appears to be much improved over the 2007 team, giving senior quarterback John Day plenty of opportunities to hit Travis Dalton, Tyler Jones, Andy Genslinger, or Luke Donson. If this scrimmage is any indication, the football will be flying around this year. The run and shoot appears to be back in full force.

The Spartans take on the Thurgood Marshall Cougars in the season opener this Friday at Welcome Stadium. Game time is 7:30 pm. The Division II Cougars finished with a 4-6 record last year including a 35-6 loss to Valley in Week 1.
