Posted by Mike Dowden On August - 11 - 2010     ADD COMMENTS

Looking for bright, charming, witty intern for unpaid position in our small, but thriving organization. Work after school. Work on some weekends. Work when it’s convenient for us.

You Will Get Smarter For It

Do you know HTML? Perhaps dabbled with Photoshop? Excel spreadsheets? The Internet? What do you know? If you know nothing now, we will teach you. If you already know these things, then you can teach us.

In the end you will be a more rounded person, broke but not destitute, and feeling alive for the first time in your life.

Since we can’t afford to pay you with anything tangible like money, we might ask you to bring us a Diet Pepsi™ on occasion. But in the end you will have learned some valuable information about the tech world, how to build web sites, and a boatload of contacts that can help you later in life.

Call us, 696-9099 and we might answer, but email us and we always will.

Ward A. Lindenmuth will be remembered for his quietly effective leadership.

Ward A. Lindenmuth (on January 30, 2010)

There have been few like him around here. The Germantown and Valley View communities lost one of their most popular and revered community pillars this week, a man who led an effective, compassionate and joyous life, qualities he shared with everyone around him.

Ward A. Lindenmuth, Jr., age 83,  passed away in his sleep Tuesday February 2, 2010 at his home in Germantown, Ohio. An Army veteran of WW II, Ward was the son of Ward A. (an educator in the Germantown schools) and Omah H. (Smith) Lindenmuth, born April 29, 1926.  His sister Ida Louella (“Lindy”) Brockmeyer and an infant sister Marjorie Louise, predeceased him.

He is survived by his wife of  58 years Joanna M. (O’Connor) Lindenmuth, as well as three daughter, Sherri Vincent (Darrell) of Eaton, Patricia L. Leppla (Gary) of Germantown and Krista Storms (Jim) of Farmersville, and a son W. Roderick (Rick) Lindenmuth of Worthington.  His devoted grandchildren  include Brandon, Elicia and Sarah Vincent; Dominic, Miranda and Philip Leppla; Roderick (“RJ”), Andrea and Wesley Lindenmuth; and Joshua and Jessica Storms.

Ward will be remembered for his quietly effective leadership as a vocational agriculture teacher, principal and assistant superintendent in the local schools. Other than his time in the Army, as a student at The Ohio State University (B.S. Agri/Educ 1950, M.S. 1957, Alpha Gamma Sigma) where he met Joanna,  and one year teaching in Versailles, Ward spent his entire life in German Township.

Upon the occasion of the consolidation of Germantown and Farmersville Local Schools into the Valley View School District in the late 1960’s, Ward was a key player in smoothing the transition, acting as the last principal of Germantown High School, and as the de facto principal at Valley View during the early days. He moved on to be the Assistant Superintendent of Valley View schools (where he was inducted into the Valley View Hall of Fame in 2006), streamlining the transportation system, dramatically upgrading the curriculum and providing long established local understanding and leadership.

As a member of the Germantown Lions Club (where he had served as president and had perfect attendance for over 36 years extending to the time of his death); the Historical Society of Germantown (he sometimes called it “hysterical” in good humor, having been a Charter member);  as a past valued member of the Day-Mont West Community Health Board; an active member of the Germantown Alumni Association (past-president); Chair of the Germantown Rescue Squad Annual Fund drive (where he led the effort to raise over $90,000); as an active member of the statewide Ohio Vocational Association (past Secretary) and as a Life Member of The Ohio State University Alumni Association, his example of involvement and service, honor and integrity, kindness to all and loyalty to his family and Church (Emmanuel’s Lutheran Church in Germantown) was singular.  Ward was a proud graduate of Ohio State, a loyal friend and companion to buddies like his sidekick Frank Kozarec, and the ultimate family man.

Ward Lindenmuth was a role model and a complete gentleman. The lives he touched as an administrator and teacher , the impact he had as a parent, spouse and grandfather, and the good will he generated through community service are his legacy.

Visitation will be held by the family from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Dalton Funeral Home in Germantown, Ohio on Thursday February 4, 2010. A memorial service will be held at Emmanuel’s Lutheran Church in Germantown on Friday February 5, 2010 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that friends consider contributions to Emmanuel’s Lutheran Church in Germantown or the Germantown Fire and EMS.

Chris Lykins breaks ups a pass intended for former Spartan, now Carlisle Indian Jordan Jacobs.

Sophomore Chris Lykins breaks up the two-point conversion attempt intended for former Spartan, now Carlisle Indian, Jordan Jacobs. Jacobs caught 2 passes for 40 yards.

“Be prepared to see some exciting things tonight,” Valley View football coach Jay Niswonger said with a big smile, prior to his team taking the field against the Carlisle Indians Friday night.

Despite the absence of quarterback Kyle Pohl with a concussion, running back Joe Kelly with a leg injury, and offensive lineman Wes Jackson with a separated shoulder, Niswonger’s Valley View Spartans found a way to come from behind and defeat the Indians, 22-8. Both teams even their records at 6-2.

Carlisle scored first when they sacked running back Zac Cottingim in the endzone, just two plays after a stingy Spartan defense stop the Indians on 4th and inches at the goal line, to go ahead 2-0.

The Spartans finally found the end zone on a tipped pass that eluded three Indian defenders and ended up in the arms of junior wide receiver, Robbie Skidmore, to end the third quarter.

However on their next possession Carlisle, on an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, found themselves in prime field position, and on a 1 yard run by QB Jake Gibson, regained the lead, 8-7.

The Indians’ lead didn’t last long.

Valley View came roaring back when  Tyler Schenck fumbled the kick at the 15 and then expertly avoided tacklers for 85 yards to put the Spartans back on top 15-8, while at the same time dealing a blow to the short-lived Indian momentum.

The Spartans sealed the deal with 3:10 left in the game when they stopped the Indians on a 4th-and-2, just missing the first down by inches,  and a minute and a half later QB/RB Brandon Fox raced 68 yards to the end-zone giving Valley View the 22-8 win.

Carlisle’s last win against the Spartans came 21 years ago, in 1988, 27-15.  Valley View leads the series 28-8, including an 82-0 win in 1995.

Turnovers Stall Spartans

Posted by Mike Dowden On September - 13 - 2009     ADD COMMENTS

2009_monroe-5 The Monroe Hornets picked up their second win of the young season at the expense of the Valley View Spartans, 41-26, in Southwest Buckeye League cross-over play Friday night. The win also gave the Hornets (2-1) their first victory over Valley View (2-1) in 4 years.

“There’s not a whole lot to say about this one,” Valley View coach Jay Niswonger said.

Valley View struggled from the opening kickoff, mustering a measly 6 yards before punting to Monroe. The Hornets wasted no time with their first possession, marching 45 yards to open the scoring, 7-0.

The Spartans first score came on a Hornet fumble. Two plays later QB Kyle Pohl threw a perfect strike 35 yards to freshman wide receiver, Andrew Zellner. The failed point after brought the Spartans within one, 7-6.

The rest of the first half scoring was all controlled by the Hornets, mostly relying on Valley View miscues, but helped by a battle on the front line that the Spartans were losing.

Monroe’s first half scoring was largely a result of a faulty Pohl pass to Brandon Fox (when the Hornet defender took advantage of Fox’s lack of awareness and raced in to pick of the pass for a TD) and a fumble recovery deep in Spartan territory. Sr. Zac Eckert punched in a picture perfect field goal from 43 yards out to help the Hornets to a 24-6 halftime lead.

“Monroe took advantage of two interceptions we threw and a fumble we gave them, and that’s what good teams do. You take away those three turnovers and it’s a 10-6 game at halftime and we’re still in it,” Niswonger said.

And even down 18 points, the Spartans still had a chance to start playing football in the second half. That is until Hornet safety Ben Leahy (sr.) returned the second-half kickoff 85 yards for a TD.

“Our inexperience showed tonight and Monroe really took it to us.” The Spartans started the season with only two returning starters.

Another aspect that stopped the Spartans were the 28 penalties called, including six unsportsmanlike penalties. While Valley View racked up 96 yards in fouls to the Monroe’s 70, the flags kept flying at the most inopportune times for the Spartans. Such as, an incomplete pass on a tight end screen that incurred intentional grounding.

Valley View did provide the crowd with some excitement in the fourth period, scoring on each of their last three possessions of the game, including a 32 yard TD strike to Jordan Crouse with no time remaining on the clock.
